Pickleball Referee
Step 1: Study the Rules
- The free "Pickleball FYI" mobile app is available for iPhone and Android and has all the rules sorted, searchable, and makes it easy to reference on your phone. Plus, it automatically updates every year when the new rules come out. Get it here!

Step 2: Watch this Referee "Quick Start" Video
Step 3: Join the "Pickleball Rules" Facebook group
While certainly not a requirement, joining a Facebook Group like "Pickleball Rules" is a great way to
ask questions, discuss rules, talk about scenarios, and more.

Step 4: Test Yourself Regularly
Pickleball Trivia is a great way to test your rules knowledge. Just check the "Rules questions only" box before you play.
Step 5: Find a Nearby Referee Trainer
It's never too early to get in touch with a USA Pickleball Certified Referee Trainer. Click here to find one near you. They'll help you through the process of refining your skills, teaching you how to properly referee a match, and will help you get involved in refereeing at actual tournaments!
Step 6: Get Your Gear
As a pickleball referee, there are certain things you'll need. A clip board, pencils, and a server clip are the a must, even just to start
practicing. When you're ready to start reffing at tournaments, you'll also want to look the part.
The standard pickleball referee outfit is black shoes, black socks, black shorts, pants, or skirt, white colared shirt, and white hat.
